AFRO BEAT AND AMAPIANO TAKEOVER

We have observed the rise of various music genres in the global music scene. From House to Kwaito, Trap, and Drill (UK type), Afrobeat and Amapiano have undeniably made significant contributions to the music industry in Malawi and beyond.

In Malawi, Afrobeat has been warmly embraced. Artists in the country draw inspiration from the iconic Nigerian musician, Fela Kuti, who is credited with pioneering this genre through a fusion of jazz, funk, and traditional African rhythms.

Amapiano, a subgenre of kwaito and house music originating from South Africa in the mid-2010s, gained widespread popularity across the African continent in 2019. This was evident through increased digital streams and chart success in countries far beyond its South African roots.

It is evident that many artists in Malawi are now incorporating Afrobeat and Amapiano beats into their music to resonate with the current musical landscape.

Merchah, also known as Uchizi Msowoya, highlighted the impact of Afrobeat and Amapiano on the lyrical content of artists in Malawi. He emphasized that these genres are not only popular within Malawi but also resonate with audiences outside the country.
