ONLINE MOVIE BUSINESS
There was a time when artists were simply viewed as entertainers, performing for a song. However, the landscape is changing as more artists are embracing their craft as a business. KONDWANI KAMIYALA had a conversation with Roselyn Dzanja, a part-time drama lecturer at the University of Malawi, during the recent International Theatre Festival.
Filmmaker Charles Shemu Joyah took a unique approach when he released The Road to Sunrise six years ago, opting not to release it on DVD. After receiving positive feedback, he decided to distribute it on Vimeo, where viewers can access the movie for a fee. This move has been praised by many, including John Ambali, who found the snippets intriguing and decided to pay for the full movie.
Malawian filmmakers have long struggled to find effective ways to distribute their work, with some resorting to platforms like YouTube. However, the decision to use Vimeo has been seen as a positive step by Ashukile Mwakisulu, the vice-president of the Filmmakers Association of Malawi.
