ONLINE MOVIE BUSINESS

Image
There was a time when artists were simply viewed as entertainers, performing for a song. However, the landscape is changing as more artists are embracing their craft as a business. KONDWANI KAMIYALA had a conversation with Roselyn Dzanja, a part-time drama lecturer at the University of Malawi, during the recent International Theatre Festival. Filmmaker Charles Shemu Joyah took a unique approach when he released The Road to Sunrise six years ago, opting not to release it on DVD. After receiving positive feedback, he decided to distribute it on Vimeo, where viewers can access the movie for a fee. This move has been praised by many, including John Ambali, who found the snippets intriguing and decided to pay for the full movie. Malawian filmmakers have long struggled to find effective ways to distribute their work, with some resorting to platforms like YouTube. However, the decision to use Vimeo has been seen as a positive step by Ashukile Mwakisulu, the vice-president of the Filmmakers As...

FASHION AND MUSIC

Image
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Malawian music legends like Lucius Banda, the late Vic Marley, and Evison Matafale were at the forefront of the industry. However, fashion was not a top priority for these icons. Their main focus was on captivating audiences with their music rather than making a fashion statement. Their music videos and live shows often featured them in casual, laid-back outfits, mirroring the chill vibes of the era. Female dancers rocked flared jeans, backless tops, and blended in with the crowd. Fast forward to today's Malawian music scene, and a noticeable shift towards fashion is apparent. Artists have become trendsetters, pushing boundaries and reshaping the industry's aesthetic. This change is largely driven by the desire to compete on a global scale. Collaborations between musicians and fashion designers have further emphasized the importance of style in the music world. Designers now collaborate closely with artists to create outfits that complement th...

This was evident through increased digital streams and chart success in countries far beyond its South African roots. It is evident that many artists in Malawi are now incorporating Afrobeat and Amapiano beats into their music to resonate with the current musical landscape.
